Panther Men Head South to Long Beach
With a second meet in three days during Spring Break, the Panthers chose to venture south in search of better weather and unfamiliar competition and would find it at the Long Beach College Viking Classic. With the opportunity to compete under a clear sky and warmer than Salinas weather, the Panthers enjoyed a small but productive competition.
Sophomore Orlando Dorado enjoyed his second 12 meter throw in the shot put this season with a new lifetime best 12.30m/40-4.25 to place second. Zachary Sims won his second javelin competition within a week with a toss of 54.34m/178-3. He continues to lead the conference and Northern California in just his second year throwing the event. Ramon Duran (41.03m/134-7) and Joshua Shimoda (39.18m/128-6) also had season bests. Sims returned in the triple jump to win the competition with a season best 13.13m/43-1 distance. Teammate Ethan Lavina netted another 13 meter competition placing second to Sims in 13.07m/42-10.75. Lavina also jumped 6.43m/21-1.25 in the long jump. Fellow freshman Johnny Venegas had four jumps over six meters with a lifetime best 6.22m/20-5 in the fourth round. Javin Nair won the pole vault (3.57m/11-8.50) with the competition ending at that height due to a malfunction with the standards.
Ramon Duran lead in both hurdle races covering the 110mHH in 16.49 and the 400mIH in a lifetime best 58.44. Ricky Diaz III won the 800 meters in 1:58.12, his third consecutive 1:58 race. Joshua Riley got his first college victory in the 1500 meters (4:09.93). Louie Brambila ran 23.45 for a lifetime best in the 200 meters to lead all Hartnell sprinters. He also debuted in 55.04 in the 400 meters. First year track athlete Fabian Rodriguez lowered his 100 meters to 11.50.
The Panthers will split squads at the De Anza Field Meet and Johnny Mathis Invitational at San Francisco State University. This will be the Panthers second trip to the city by the bay having already competed there for the Mike Fanelli Classic on March 30-April 1.
