Sims Has Good Day One at Decathlon Championship
Competing in his first Northern California Decathlon Championship, sophomore Zachary Sims started his day one of the competition with three decathlon personal bests and finished fourth out of twelve competitors with a score of 3166 points.
Sims started the competition with a second place 100 meters in 11.18, good for 821 points. Competing on the new runways at Modesto Junior College, most of the jumps were far off their personal bests with Sims at a decent 6.30m, good for fourth in the long jump portion of the competition. His mark gave him 652 points. The Hollister High School grad would shot put 10.49m, the fifth best mark of the field and worth 515 points. His high jump would be the major highlight of day one with Sims clearing a new personal best 1.82m, just short of the State "B" mark for the high jump. That was the fifth best clearance of the twelve competitors and netted Sims 644 points. To finish day one, he would run 56.65 in the 400 meters, 534 points given for the effort.
Day two would include the 110 meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and the 1500 meters. Sims will look to get into the top 8 and pick up the first championship points of the 2023 Northern California Championship for the Panthers.
