Johnny Mathis Good to the Panther Men
The Hartnell College men's track & field team returned in full force for their second trip to San Francisco to compete in the Johnny Mathis Invitational. With all event groups represented, the Panthers were able to show improvement in key areas heading in to this season's championship season.
In the sprints, Marco Espinoza-Morado continued to power the Panther sprints with an 11.09 performance in a heavy four year field. He also lowered his lifetime best in the 200 meters to 22.47. Javin Nair ran his first 200 meters in under 24 seconds with his 23.93 as he preps for pole vaulting in the championships. Louie Brambila lead in the one lap 400 meter race at 54.40. Ramon Duran inched closer to his high school best in the sprint hurdles but over 42 inches with a mark of 16.27. He also ran his fourth 400mIH race under 59 seconds with a 58.48 performance. Freshman Bernabe Munoz nearly broke 60 seconds for the first time with his 60.08 performance as he looks to extend his season beyond the conference championship. The 4x100 relay was timed in 44.21 as they continue to find the right combination and the 4x400 was 3:34.95.
Esteban Deniz and Ricky Diaz III produced fast 1500 meter marks with the pair going 3:57.22 and 3:57.68. They would double back in the 5000 meters with 15:01.24 and 15:02.73. Joshua Riley would net the next fastest 1500 meters of the day for the Panthers at 4:05.25. In the 800 meters, Hawaiian state champion Kaimana Cantere flirted with his first sub 2:00 at 2:00.65. Jose Velazquez lowered his season best 5000 meters to 15:27.82 with Riley putting together his best double 15:46.23. Mario Avila dipped under 16 for the second time this season at 15:59.67.
Elijah Washington cleared 1.70m in high jump with Javin Nair at 3.85m in the pole vault. Zachary Sims won the triple jump with 13.12m.
Orlando Dorado enjoyed a new best in the shot put at 12.53m and also had marks of 35.16m in the discus and 43.67m in the hammer to lead the Panthers. Christopher Ruiz lead in the javelin at 37.82m.
Than Panthers will conclude the regular season with the first ever meet at Laney College in the Lany College Last Chance on Friday, April 21.
