Frosh Lavina Leads at Laney Last Chance
Over the course of three jumps, frosh Ethan Lavina moved himself up the Norcal ladder and into contention for an individual title. Competing at the Laney Last Chance Meet in Oakland, Lavina improved his series from a first round jump of 13.35m to 13.71m to his eventual winning mark and State "B" of 13.87m. That distance moved him into third best in Northern California in his first year with the Panthers. He is currently just 0.13cm away from the top spot and just a half ince away from the Hartnell top 20 all-time.
Also competing in the triple jump, Zachary Sims improved on his lifetime best to 13.15m that is currently good for tenth in Northern California. Sims also cleared 1.85m in the high jump to meet the State "B" standard joining Lavina as qualifiers in the event. Sims was also 6.55m in the long jump with Lavina right behind in 6.49m and teammate Elijah Washington at 6.44m. Javin Nair tied his season best in the pole vault at 3.85m.
Sophomore Orlando Dorado enjoyed his best shot put day to date. He extended his best distance with the 16 lb shot put to 12.75m. He was also a consistent 35.27m in the discus and 42.77m in the hammer. Edgar Martinez (39.89m) and Hugo Chayres (39.27m) also enjoyed good marks in the hammer, with Chayres at a lifetime best. Zachary Sims won the javelin with a 52.78m mark. Joshua Shimoda was second at 38.32m.
In the sprints, Marco Espinoza-Morado lead at 11.29 in the 100 meters. Bernabe Munoz lowered his lifetime best in the 400 meters to 53.94. Ramon Duran improved over the high hurdles to 16.22. The men's 4x400 relay team of Ramon Duran, Espinoza-Morado, Kaimana Cantere, and Liam Pattison were timed in a season best 3:32.07.
Frosh Moises Benito returned to action to win the 1500 meters in a season best 4:02.33. Jose Velazquez ran a lifetime best 4:09.52 to finish third. Kaimain Cantere paced the Panthers in the 800 meters with a time of 2:00.31. Leonardo Diaz was the top Panther in the 5000 meters (18:09.80).
The Panthers will host the 2023 Coast Conference Championship starting on Wednesday, April 26th with finals being contested in the long jump, pole vault, shot put, and hammer along with the 10,000 meter run.
