Felix Named HC Female Athlete of the Year
Hartnell College sophomore Yvette Felix may never have imagined being named the first Bill Elliott Female Athlete of the Year but her resume of accomplishments from her final year make her a worthy recipient. Felix, who prepped at Anzar HS, made huge improvements in her second year starting in the fall during cross country season. She finished as the top Lady Panther in all but one competition. She was the overall winner at the Hartnell College Invitational at San Lorenzo Park in King City. Felix was the Coast Conference Champion at Crystal Springs and earned all-region honors for her fourth place finish at the Northern California Championship. She lead the ladies to a third place trophy. At the CCCAA Championships, she was a top 35 finisher overall after being the Lady Panthers seventh runner as a freshman.
This spring, Yvette has built on that success running all-time performances in school history in the 1500 meters, 3000 meters, 5000 meters, and 10,000 meters. She was one of only three women in Northern California to meet the State Automatic qualifying standard in the 5000 meter run. A triple conference champion, Felix was victorious at 1500 meters, 5000 meters, and 10,000 meters. She was also a three event scorer a week later at the Northern California Championship placing sixth in the 15000 meters, third in the 5,000 meters, and second in the 10,000 meters. At her first ever CCCAA Track & Field Championship, Yvette placed ninth amongst the best 5000 meter females in the state.
Yvette Felix will continue her academic and athletic career at East Central Oklahoma University in Enid, Oklahoma. She will major in liberal studies with the goal of becoming a science teacher.
