Women Prep for Championship at Laney
Laney College hosted their first track meet in over 20 years on a sunny Oakland day on Friday. The Hartnell women's track & field team enjoyed a solid day of competition in preparation to host the 2023 Coast Conference Championshp on Wednesday, April 26 and Saturday, April 29.
Sophomore Lorraine Mankins found the runways at Laney to be to her liking posting two personal bests. She achieved the State "A" mark in the triple jump with a lifetime best 11.19m which moves the North County grad into the top 3 in Norcal and seventh best in Hartnell history. She also cleared 3.20m for the first time this season. The defending Norcal champion in the pole vault will face her first challenge next week facing the defending Coast Conference champion Andi Aymond of Chabot College. Mankins also jumped 4.81m in the long jump to finish third with teammate Clodine Tabernilla ahead a lifetime best 4.91m that moves her to twelfth in Northern California. Mercedes Rosales-Rivera recorded marks of 9.53m in the triple jump and 4.42m in the long jump. Daisy Macias lead in the high jump at 1.40m.
In the throws, Grace Padron continued to lead in the shot put for the Panthers with a best mark of 8.97m. She was also tops in the discus with 32.76m. Isabella Reimann continued to dominate regional competition with a winning mark of 46.37m on Thursday. Padron was solid at 36.26m and Zairah Hernandez another 32.72m mark. Clodine Tabernilla won the javelin event in 27.62m.
Sofia Camacho and Andrea Villegas ran a total of just four laps all day but made them count. Camacho placed fourth in the 400m in her first attempt of the season in 61.29. Villegas was right behind in 61.84. The pair came back after a break for the 100 meters to run 2:19.66 and 2:20.04, with Villegas improving on her best time of the season. Also in the 800 meters, freshman Dominique Cervantes-Samudio nearly achieved the State "A" mark but lowered her season best to 2:22.62. Camacho and Villegas teammed up with Mankins and Macias for a 4:19.19 performance in the 4x400 relay. Also in the 800 meters, Jade Pimentel and Ana Martinez lowered their bests to 2:37.98 and 2:38.41 in preparation for the conference championship.
In events over two laps. Ilianna Martinez sharpened up her speed with a lifetime best 5:37.38 in the 1500 meters. Maria Garcia was timed in 5:41.80 in her return to the event. Lasiplazuli Hernandez lowered her best to 5:51.07.
Isabella Reimann got back to her hurdle roots leading the Panthers in 16.80 in her debut. She was followed by Mankins (17.02) and Macias (17.11). Mankins lead in the 400mLH in 1:19.16. Ilianna Martinez was second in 1:23.08. In the sprints, Roxana Ruelas lowered her lifetime best in the 100 meters to 13.05. She also clocked 26.79 in the 200 meters.
The Panthers will compete next on Wednesday, April 26th in the first day of the 2023 Coast Conference Championship. Events to be contested include the long jump, pole vault, shot put, hammer, and 10,000 meters.
