Seven Women Named to 2019 All-State Academic XC Team
The 2019 cross country season saw the Hartnell College complete a rare back-to-back regional championship along with another consecutive Coast Conference team title and top 4 finish at the CCCAA State Championship. That success was mirrored in the classroom as an outstanding seven women earned a 3.50 or higher GPA during the fall 2019 season. Those included were sophomores Daniela Salazar, Isabelle Torres, Nerina Campos, Shantal Martinez, Maria Hernandez, and freshmen Faith Mora and Mariah Changco.
Sophomore Daniela Salazar capped two seasons of cross country with the Panthers with a Coast Conference individual title at Toro Park to lead the women to a seventh consecutive team title. She would go on to place second overall at the Northern CA Championship and earn a second All-American honor for her fifth place finish at the CCCAA State Championship. Her time of 18:36 at Woodward Park is the third best in program history. Isabelle Torres started off the season in phenomenal shape and recorded a personal best at Woodward Park while placing eighth overall at the Fresno Invitational. That would be her lowest finish of the season before a fibular stress fracture forced her to sit out the conference and regional meet before returning to help the women to a fourth place finish at state. Nerina Campos enjoyed a break out fall capped with a fifth place finish at the regional championshp to earn her second consecutive honor. Shantal Martinez shined in her one season for the Panthers. A transfer from Ohio Valley University, the former Notre Dame High School runner made her presence known from the gun with a tenth place finish at the Fresno Invitational. She placed as high as second at the Coast Conference Championship and third at the Northern CA Championship before earning All-State honors. Faith Mora rallied back from a mid-summer injury to record a solid 20:15 at the State Championship. Mora also earned her first all-conference honor. Mariah Changco enjoyed some very good races as a freshman while learning to train like a Panther. She was 20:19 at the Fresno Invitational and eighth overall at the Norcal Preview Meet at Toro Park. Sophomore Maria Hernandez finished 29th at the Coast Conference Championship.
