With the possibility of a tie against Irvine Valley College imminent after the first 90 minutes, the Cerritos College men's soccer team scored in extra time to come away with a 2-1 victory on Saturday in the second game of the Hartnell Tournament. A day after dropping a 3-0 decision to host Hartnell College, the Falcons (2-2-0) scored their goals early and late to earn the win against the Lasers (0-3-0). Cerritos will now get a 10-day rest before they host Cuyamaca College in a 4:00 p.m. non-conference game on September 10.
The Falcons opened up a quick 1-0 lead when sophomore Donovan Perez (South East HS) scored in the sixth minute. The team-leader in goals last season (10), Perez was able to finish the play on a chip shot into the net after receiving a pass from sophomore Adan Gonzalez (South East HS).
Freshman goalkeeper Griffin Welch (Long Beach Poly HS) earned the win after turning away three Irvine Valley shots on goal. He was rewarded with the win after the Falcons slipped the game-winning shot into the net before time could expire.
One minute into extra time, freshman Daniel Vazquez (Perry Academy, GA HS) was able to find some room in the Lasers defense and threaded a pass to freshman Cesar Solarzano Garcia (California Pacific Charter HS), who scored his first goal of the season and sent the Falcons to victory.
In the loss to Hartnell, Cerritos found themselves down 2-0 after the first 11 minutes and could only get six shots on the day. Welch was peppered with shots and turned in a season-high seven saves.
