Shelby White hurled a 14-strikeout, four-hit gem to lead West Valley to an important 1-0 win over visiting Hartnell Tuesday afternoon. White faced 27 batters and allowed a Panther to reach third only once. While WVC bats only got a pair of hits, the single run for which they accounted was all they would need with White in the circle.

After giving up a game-opening walk to Kassandra Wilson, White struck out the next three batters and would record at least one K in each of her seven innings of work. The Viking offense was popping up the ball all afternoon, resulting in seven fly ball outs, but would get back-to-back triples in a pivotal second inning.

Michelle Gonzales laced a one-out shot that got past the Hartnell centerfielder and all the way to the wall to open the second. Reyna Cruz sent the next pitch down the right field line for another three-bagger that drove in Gonzales. Cruz would be thrown out at home on an Isabella Gallegos grounder to third and WVC would not have another baserunner until Emelia Araiza walked in the sixth. With White in control, the Gonzales run would be the game-winner.

West Valley (23-13, 8-4 Coast) hosts San Jose City (33-4, 11-1) Thursday in a crucial Coast contest. With two conference games remaining, the Vikings are in third place, a game ahead of Monterey Peninsula. The top two teams in the Coast receive automatic berths in the CCCAA NorCal playoffs. First pitch Thursday is 3:00pm.
