Head Football Coach Matt Collins - Entering his 17th Season at Hartnell College
Coach Collins enters year 17, he is the longest-tenured football coach in Hartnell College history. Between the 2013-2016 seasons, the Panthers played in 4 straight California Community College Football Bowl Championship games, and a total of 6 in the past decade, Hartnell has won 4 Conference titles, 2 Division titles, and have participated in 6 bowl games. In 2015, Hartnell finished with a 10-1 record (5-1 in conference play). The Panthers advanced to the Living Breath Foundation Bowl and beat Contra Costa College by the score of 41-28. After completing back-to-back 9-2 records in 2013 and 2014, the Panthers 10 season total is now a combined record of 71-35. In addition, the Panthers have won 4 conference championships between the 2011-2014 seasons, rewriting most all of the individual and team records held at the college. This is a huge milestone for the football program in this modern era. There have been 160+ players that have earned some form of a scholarship to a University during Collins’ tenure. Coach Collins has placed a high emphasis on education, and he works diligently at helping his student-athletes reach their educational and athletic goals through the use of the academic support system that is in place at Hartnell College. The athletic department has 2 counselors assigned to assist all student-athletes, ensuring degree completion through structured educational plans. It is well known that Hartnell College has had many successful years of athletics; particularly, the football program is well known for its winning tradition. “It is an honor to hold the position of Head Football Coach at a school whose reputation of success is known throughout the country. Our athletic programs have shown an improved attitude of work ethic and commitment and it has become infectious around the Hartnell campus. With the support of our athletic director Danny Teresa, the fundraising efforts of our colleges’ foundation personnel, leadership from newly hired President/Superintendent Michael Gutierrez, and a solid group of coaches/support staff, we will continue to develop our student-athletes into productive members of our community. It’s our mission to mold student-athletes into responsible, accountable individuals and assist them in achieving a college education. Life is full of obstacles and adversities, and the game of football is full of similar challenges. As a coach, I have an opportunity to impress upon our players the importance of overcoming challenges that they may be faced with while balancing their education, athletics, and other outside obstacles in everyday life”.
