Headley's Discus Mark Highlights Tough Loss in Dual Meet
Competing in his first Hartnell vs DeAnza "Duel" Meet, frosh Ashton Headley used a beautiful evening to throw the discus to hit at the State "A" and move to fifteenth best in program history. His mark of 45.13m (148-1) sits fifth in Northern California. Also throwing well in the discus competition was sophomore Manuel Gallardo. Gallardo, who threw for the Panthers back in 2018, produced his best mark in his return for the Panthers with a mark of 44.07m (144-7). This mark will also move Gallardo into the top 20 all-time in Hartnell history. Andy Ruiz had Northern California provisional mark in the hammer at 39.77m (130-6).
In the men's track events, Francisco Maciel earned the State "A" in the 3k steeplechase with a lifetime best 9:46.00 in just his third attempt in the event. Running in his second 3k steeplechase ever and still in his first track season ever, frosh Daniel Pantoja got the State "B" mark with his first sub 10 clocking at 9:57.31. Sprinter Jesse Mandujano enjoyed his best individual day this season going 50.84/22.75 in the 400/200, the latter being his first ever sub 23 clocking in his career. Esteban Deniz won the 1500m in 4:02.74 and was second in the 3000m in 9:02.81. Isaac Gensel went under two minutes in the 800 meters for the second time this season in placing second in 1:58.85. Rex Tomimbang, Jr. set a season personal best in 17.07 in the 110HH. Ramon Duran dipped under 60 seconds for the first time in the 400mIH to win in 59.65.
In the field in addition to Headley's marks, Elijah Washington flirted with the regional provisional placing second with a season best 6.44m (21-1.50). Zachary Sims almost eclipsed 13 meters with a season best 12.95m (42-6). Manuel Gallardo also hit a season best in the shot put at 11.89m (39-0.25) to lead the Panthers in the event. Orlando Dorado hit 11 meters in the shot put for the first time with his 11.14m (36-6.75).
The Panthers will travel to Walnut, CA on April 9th for the Mt. SAC Invitational. The meet will serve a preview of the facility that will be used for the 2022 CCCAA State Track & Field Championship.
