Hartnell Women Best Overall Team at Chabot Opener
Having won the last four Northern California team titles, the Hartnell College women definitely have the targets on their backs heading into the 2024 season. Despite finding themselves on the losing side of the Hartnell vs De Anza "Duel" Meet, the Panther women bounced back in their first big meet at the Chabot Opener in Hayward and attended by several outstanding programs. Hartnell was able to win by 8 points in the scoring signaling once again the potential to be a trophy team come May.
Sophomore Daisy Macias continues to prep for her second Norcal Heptathlon Champioship with two State "B" marks. Macias was the overall winner of the 100mh in a lifetime best of 15.71, shaving almost a full second off her previous lifetime best. She also hit the qualifying mark in the high jump clearing 1.45m. Teammate Emily Orozco debuted in the high jump with a 1.45m clearance as well. Macias ran second leg on the 4x100 team which lowered its season best to 53.33 and lead off on the 4x400. Macias also lowered her 200m best to 27.13.
Freshman Roselyn Olivo punched her first State "A" ticket with an extraordinary debut in the 10,000 meter run. Despite running the 1500 meter earlier in the day, Olivo ran the eleventh fastest 25 laps in the Hartnell College history. Her time of 39:17.10 takes the early regional and state lead and guarantees the Alvarez product will be at state in May. Olivo also joined the sub 5:00 group in women's history in the 1500 meters running 4:59.16 to get the State "B" and be ranked third in the region.
Taylan Flower lead in the 400mLH running six seconds fastest than last week in 74.76, a time that ranks her in the top 5 in the region. Valeria Lozano-Gomez continues her return with a solid double of 5:12.25 and 2:34.21. Flower also triple jumped for the first time nearly reaching 30 feet with a mark of 8.91m. Sophomore Linette Martinez-Morales lead in the shot put with a toss of 8.74m, a new personal best. She also saw a nearly four meter improvement in the hammer to 34.42m. Grace Padron won her second hammer competition breaking the 40 meter barrier four times in her six throws with a best of 41.60m. Lucianna Romeo, the former All-American swimmer for Hartnell, also improved to 34.84m in the hammer.
If weather permits, the Panthers will compete next at the Reid/Reynon Relays at American River College on Friday, March 1.
