Panther Women Second at Norcal Preview Meet
With freshman Roselyn Olivo back in the line-up, the Hartnell College women's cross country team found themselves back in second overall at the George Brooks Memorial Invitational. The meet served as the preview of the course at Hidden Valley Park that will be run on November 3rd for the 2023 Northern California Championship. The Hartnell women scored 56 points to place second to winner Clovis Community College who tallied 33 points to continue to be the favorite for this year's championship.
Andrea Villegas made it three for three for victories this season running away from the field quickly within the first mile and extended her lead to 50 seconds at the finish line. Villegas has been unchallenged in all three of her victories with no runner closer than 34 seconds. She covered the Hidden Valley Course in 18:11 with second place going to Julia Martinez of Clovis Community College at 19:01. Roselyn Olivo was right behind Martinez as they began the final hill before the finish line but a mis-timed rolled ankle had her slip back to fifth in 19:30. Olivo is poised to earn All-Norcal in her first year as a Panther. Jimena Hernandez and Alexandra Campos ran the course together finishing in 20:58 and 21:02. Both finished inside the top 20 overall. Sophomore All-Conference runner Maria Garcia finish the team scoring in 28th in 21:28. Freshman mid-distance phenom Dominique Cervantes-Samudio showed improved finishing 37th in 22:12. Lapislazuli Hernandez rounded out the top seven with her fastest race at 22:51.
The Panthers will hit the track on Thursday for the Chabot Twilight. This unique fall event will allow the Panthers to run either a 3000m or 5000m on the track.
