Panther Women Second at Historic Mt. SAC Invite
The Hartnell women's cross country team made the long trip south to Walnut, CA for the historic Mt. SAC Invitational to run the challenging course in preparation for the championship season. With two top 14 finishers and a second place overall team finish, the Panthers appear ready for the final three meets of the 2023 season.
Sophomore Andrea Villegas easily bested the field after finding the pace too slow on the flat "Valley" loop. She would extend her lead on the uphill "Switchbacks" to over 10 seconds at the "Airstrip" cross-over. By the finish, Villegas would gap the field by 24 seconds and record her sixth race win of her final season as a Panther. More importantly, she set her first Hartnell record lowering the Mt. SAC team record of 18:09 set by Malena Grover in 2015. Behind her, freshman Roselyn Olivo continues to improve and finished eighth overall in 19:43 in her first run over the famous course. Freshman Jimena Hernandez (21:17), Maria Garcia (21:53) and Alexandra Campos (22:46) would complete the top five scorers. Dominique Cervantes-Samudio (23:00) and Lapis Hernandez (23:01) completed the top seven.
The Panthers will compete next at the Coast Conference Championship on Wednesday, October 25th at the Palo Corona Cross Country Course. After finishing second in 2022, the Hartnell women will look to win their second conference title since returning from the COVID-19 pandemic.
