Hartnell Women Run to Conference Title
Back in mid-September, the Hartnell College women's cross country suffered a one point loss to host Monterey Peninsula College but had been short-handed one runner. With the squad fully represented at the 2023 Coast Conference Championship hosted by Hartnell College at the new Palo Corona Cross Country Course, the Panthers were a 20 point winner over second place Monterey Peninsula College 25-45. Intermediate race splits had the Panthers at or over the 20 point difference throughout the 5k race.
Sophomore Andrea Villegas added the conference individual title to her already impressive growing season's resume. She's been the winner of every race she's competed in this fall. Nursing a bruised pink toe, Villegas took the race a little easier than her other victories but was still 37 seconds ahead of second place. She would win the race in 19:18, 25 seconds slower than her Monterey Peninsula Invitational victory. Behind her, her heir apparent freshman Roselyn Olivo held off Jacklyn Velazquez of De Anza College for runner-up honors, both timed in 19:55. A trio of Panthers would take places seven, eight, and ten to seal the team victory. Freshmen Jimena Hernandez (21:50) was seventh, Alexandra Campos (22:00) eighth and sophomore Maria Garcia (22:18) was tenth. Isabella Rocha (22:42) and Isabelle Rocha (22:43) just missed out on all-conference honors in their first year as Panthers placing fifteenth and sixteenth to round out the top 7.
The Panthers will head into the 2023 Northern California Championship as the second ranked squad behind Clovis Community College. The Northern California Championship will be held on Friday, November 3rd at Hidden Valley Park in Martinez, CA.
