Olivo and Panther Women Victorious at Butte Invitational
The Hartnell women have been competing in a consistent manner since the beginning of their season and that consistency was rewarded with a team victory at the Butte College Invitational in Oroville, CA. This was the first time the Panthers had ever competed on the course held on campus at Butte College. The women four women in the top 7 community college finishers to easily defeat host college Butte 28 to 51. The Panthers are currenlty ranked second in Northern California and favored to win a second consecutive Coast Conference tite in a few weeks.
Sophomore Roselyn Olivo lead from the start and after navigating the big hill on the course had comfortable lead she was maintain all the way to the finish in 20:07. That time was the second best ever on the course. Following behind in 20:33 was freshman Janai Orozco, her performance good enough also to crack the top 10 all-time for the course and its five year history. Fellow freshman Yareli Meza enjoyed her best showing to date with an eighth place finish in 21:39 and Jimena Hernandez-Tejeda was ninth in 21:57. Freshman Lucero Benigno-Ramos was the fifth scoring runner in eighteenth and 23:19. Cristal Baeza (23:32) and Karen Perez (23:54) rounded out the top seven.
The Panthers will travel south for the historic Mt. SAC Invitational on October 18. The races will begin at 10:00am. The Panthers enjoyed a terffic Mt. SAC Invitational last year with now departed Andrea Villegas becoming Hartnell's first ever individual winner.
