Headley Puts Shot to State "A" at Chabot
Competing against some of the best throwers in the NCAA DII California Collegiate Athletic Assocation conference, Hartnell freshman Ashton Headley put the shot to a new lifetime best 14.48m (47-6.25) and placed fourth overall in a field of thirty one throwers at the Chabot Invitational. The mark met the State "A" mark but Headley sits seventh in Northern California. He will need to place top six at the Northern California Championship to advance to the state championship in the shot put. The mark also moves the King City grad into the top 20 all-time in the shot put.
Watsonville graduate Jesse Mandujano enjoyed a solid sprint day dropping down to the 100m and 200m. He posted times 11.64 and 23.05 in those events. Mandujano captained both relay teams to season best marks. In the 4x100 relay, the Panthers improved to 43.37 inching closer to potentially making the regional final. In the 4x400, the team of Felix Martinez, Arturo Ponce, Ramon Duran, and Mandujano flirted with their first sub 3:30 posting a season best 3:31.28. Daniel Correa improved on his regional championship qualifying 5000m to 16:01.58. Teammate Jose Velazquez dipped under the mark with a debut 16:14.44 but may need to run faster to compete in the 5000m final on May 14. Eduardo Martinez pole vaulted over eleven feet for the first time in his career clearning 3.45m (11-3.75). Jonathan Arroyo took off 8 seconds in the 400mIH improving to 63.65. Zachary Sims and Elijah Washington both enjoyed long jump season bests. Sims leaped out to 6.47m (21-2.75) and Washington 6.30m (20-8). Thrower Andy Ruiz enjoyed the added four year presence pushing him to a discus personal best 35.00m (114-10). Ruiz also became the fourth Panther with a hammer provisional mark at 39.42 (129-4). Ramon Duran lead the Panthers in the javelin with a new personal best 44.16m (144-10) to place second overall in the competition. Headley returned in the hammer to place second with a toss of 49.59m (162-8), his second best mark of the season.
The Panthers will go head to head with DeAnza College on Tuesday, April 5th for the "Duel" Meet. This meet serves as the conference team championship preview as Hartnell and DeAnza have shared most of the conference titles over the last 15 years. Field events will start at 3pm with running to begin at 4pm.
