Salazar Accepts Full Scholarship to San Jose State
Hartnell sophomore Daniela Salazar who will compete for NCAA D1 San Jose State in cross country/track & field on a full athletic scholarship. An accomplished mid-distance athlete out of Watsonville High School, Daniela utilized her two years of community college to attain her AS degree in Kinesiology with a perfect 4.00 GPA while commuting six days a week from Gilroy and competing all year round for two years. At Hartnell, she pumped up her cross country running resume by placing 2nd in conference, 3rd in the region, and 7th in the state as a freshman. She established a freshmen state meet record for place and time as well running 18:36 over the 5k course at Woodward Park. Her presence for the women's team pushed them to a region record low 19 point team score, the first team ever to score less than 30 points at the regional championship.
In the spring of her freshman year, despite missing nearly 8 weeks during her first track season, she returned just in time to win the Norcal 800m title, run on the 4x4 in the finals, helping the women's team to a back to back regional title. She finished the year with a 5th place state finish with a season best in the 800m in rain-soaked conditions in San Mateo. Daniela's sophomore cross country season was even better winning the conference title, placing 2nd at Norcals, and 5th in the CCCAA state championship to repeat as All American. She becomes the third female in program history to earn All-American honors twice in cross country. The Norcal women's team set the 2nd lowest team score as well, tallying just 29 points for their second consecutive championship. But the COVID-19 pandemic prevented what would have been a dominate final spring as a Panther. With just three meets, Daniela was already ranked #1 in the state at 1500 and 3000 having run 4:48 and 10:30 before the season was suspended on March 14. In the last opportunity to test herself, she ran a time trial in 2:14.1 on March 14 which would have broken the Hartnell 800m record. She accepts her scholarship to SJSU with all-time marks in the 800, 1500, 3000, 5000, 10,000 and 4x400 relays.
