Panther Women Close to Norcal Champ Modesto
Competing in the Wildcat Cup for the fifth time since its inception in 2019, the Hartnell College women were able to finish second to last year's Norcal Champion Modesto Junior College. The meet celebrates the number of coaches in the California Community College ranks that attended and competed for NCAA DII powerhouse CSU Chico. This year's meet features host Hartnell College, Modesto Junior College, Santa Rosa Junior College, De Anza College, Merritt College, and Yuba College. The Panther women tallied 163 points for second with Modesto winning with 174 points and De Anza College in third with 122 points.
Sophomore Roselyn Olivo contributed 30 points through her wins in the 10,000 meters, 1500 meters, and 3000 meters. She surpassed the State "A" mark in the 10,000m with a comfortable 40:42.36. In the 1500 meters (5:06.41) she was eleven seconds ahead of second place and in the 3000 meters another 24 seconds ahead (11:13.55). Freshman Janai Orozco won the 800 meters in 2:36.12. Freshman Jenna Emerson got the State "B" mark in the 400mLH in her first college attempt (68.15) after placing second in the 100mH (16.48). Sophomore Jimena Hernandez-Tejeda dipped under the State "B" in the 3k steeplechase (12:57.93). The women's 4x100 relay of Emerson, Orozco, Taylan Flower, and Daisy Andrade were timed in 53.80 in their first full competition together. Olivo and Orozco paired up with Emerson and Emily Orozco for 4:27.41 in the 4x400.
Sophomore Taylan Flower won the triple jump with 9.89m. She was also third in the high jump (1.35m). Marissa Avelar enjoyed a lifetime best in the hammer (39.02) with Isolina Barrett also starting the year with a personal best in the discus (34.33m). Barrett was also the top shot putter for the Panthers at 8.87m. Arianna Cabrera-Noriega was fourth in 27.50m in the javelin.
The Panthers will compete at the Norcal Preview Meet on Saturday, February 22nd at Butte College.
