Panther Women Top Team at Norcal Preview
The Hartnell College women finished just out of the running for a top 3 trophy in 2024 but after finishing as the top community college program at the Norcal Preview Meet, the Panther women look primed to get back to placing in the top 3. Fueled by winning performances by sophomore Roselyn Olivo and freshman Jenna Emerson, the Panther women tallied 107 points to finish 21.5 points ahead of Coast Conference rival De Anza College. The Norcal Preview Meet was hosted by Butte College and included eleven scoring teams. Butte College will play host to the 2025 Northern California Championship on May 2-3, 2025.
Freshman Jenna Emerson showed why she was the best hurdler in Salinas as a prep, placing second in the 100mH (15.77) and third in the 400mLH (67.42). Emerson picked up the State "A" in the 400mLH in just her second running of the event and the State "B" in the 100mH with her lifetime best. She also added a new event to her resume jumping 10.46m in the triple jump to pick up a third regional qualifying mark. Sophomore Roselyn Olivo picked up the win the 1500 meters (4:58.01) with a State "B" and followed that with a third place in the 800m (2:27.97) and third in the 5000m (19:26.91). Demonstrating the team's strength in the 400mLH, sophomore Emily Orozco (70.13) picked up a State "B" with Taylan Flower right (70.75). The pair also achieved the State "B" in high jump clearing 1.45m. Freshman Janai Orozco made significant progress in the middle distances lowering her season best in the 1500 meters to 5:11.51 and 800m to 2:31.50. Jimena Hernandez-Tejeda set a lifetime best in the 5000m on the track (20:28.04). The 4x400 relay team of Emerson, Orozco, Olivo, and Orozco met the State "B" with a season best 4:15.05.
In the field events, sophomore Isolina Barrett moved closer to the State "B" in the discus with her lifetime best toss of 34.81m. She also became the Hartnell's first thirty foot shot put thrower with a mark of 9.25m. Marissa Avelar was tops for the second meet in the hammer at 37.20m. Arianna Cabrera-Noriega lead in the javelin also for the second consecutive meet at 24.48m.
The Panthers will have two weeks to prepare for the Henry Kirk Invitational at Allan Hancock College and the Occidental College Spring Break Classic in Eagle Rock, CA.
