Eight in a Row for Panther Women
After not being able to compete in fall 2020, the Hartnell women's cross country team picked up where they left off in 2019 with a Coast Conference team title and the overall winner. The 2021 title makes it eight years in a row for the Panthers dating back to the 2013 title also won at Toro Park. The individual winner also continues a streak going back to 2013.
After suffering a loss to De Anza College runner Mannat Gill at the Crystal Springs Invitational, Hartnell freshman Sofia Camacho picked up her second win at Toro Park over Gill. Camacho won a close affair 19:01 to 19:04 back on October 1 with Gill leading until the final 100 meters. This time around after opening a three second lead before the hills, Camacho would emerge shoulder to shoulder with Gill setting up the final loop at Toro Park for the overall title. Camacho would accelerate much earlier and win by 15 seconds 18:26 to 18:41. Sophomore Valeria Lozano-Gomez just missed catching Gill as well running 18:42, a new Toro Park personal record by six seconds. Freshman Andrea Villegas picked up fifth in 19:08 with a healthy Karla Herrera getting sixth in 19:35 with her first full run at Toro Park this season. Freshman Ashley Ochoa was seventh in 19:46 to finish the 19 point score for the Panthers. Faith Mora had her best race of her final season for Hartnell finishing ninth to pick up repeat All-Conference honors with her 20:03. Sophomore Mariah Changco was eleventh in 20:20 for All-Conference. Daniela Ramirez, an MPC transfer, enjoyed her best run at Toro Park running 20:35 to place twelfth. Jazmin Mora picked up the final medal placing fifteenth in her first Coast Conference Championship.
The Panthers will compete next at the 2021 Northern California Championship at Sierra College. Hartnell enters the meet having won the 2018 and 2019 team titles and will look to become just the second program to win three consecutive team titles. Sofia Camacho and Valeria Gomez-Lozano will contend for the overall title. It would be the first individual title in program history. Gomez-Lozano was the Northern California Preview Meet winner back on September 10.
