Olivo and Orozco Finish With All-State Honors
The Hartnell College women's cross country team can look back on the 2024 season and feel good about the final outcome despite several setbacks. Running in rain at mud at the 3C2A State Championship at Woodward Park, the women finished sixth overall our of 23 teams and had two runners finish with all-state honors. The women had been ranked tenth heading into the final race of the year. Roselyn Olivo, an All-American las year, picked up her second all-state honors placing 20th and freshman Janai Orozco picked up her first by placing 28th overall.
With rain overnight and the first precipitation of the year in the Fresno area, Woodward Park turned into an uncharacteristic mud run. Time were slowed by 20-30 seconds but the Hartnell women managed to continue to show improvement toward 2025. Olivo ran amongst the top 14 for two miles of the race before fallling back to 20th in 19:41. Orozco ran in 28th nearly the entire race and crossed the line of her first state meet in 20:06. Sophomore Jimena Hernandez-Tejeda had one of her best cross country races of her career finishing 44th in 20:34, a 13 second course personal best and thirty three place improvement over 2023. Lucero Benigno-Ramos had her best race of her first year as a Panther covering the muddy Woodward Park course for the first time in 21:55 in 114th place. Cristal Baeza (22:22) finihsed her first cross country seaosn in nearly four years with a season best and 64 seconds faster than her first run at Woodward Park back in September. Freshman Yareli Meza had sat out the last three meets rehabbing a knee injury and returned for the state championship. Meza, who had run 21:22 at the Clovis Crush Invitational, managed to complete the race but only at 22:49. Karen Perez gained championship experience running 24:17, which was still a 16 second personal best, to conclude her first season.
With five freshmen returning from this sixth place team, the Panthers will look to win a third consecutive Coast Conference title and fourth top 3 trophy in the region next fall.
